Philippe Caza artwork
The art of Philippe Caza
27 October 2008

I have been reading the Heavy Metal magazine, on and off, since the late 1990s. It is a mixed bag of comics content and no doubt there is something good for every taste. Nevertheless every now and then they do publish brilliant work. Recently I bought many old HM issues on Ebay, from the 1970s and 1980s. Lots of good stuff in there but one artist that especially caught my attention is Caza (aka Philippe Cazaumayou, aka Philippe Caza), a very talented French comic-book artist and illustrator. There is a lot of originality in his work but perhaps even more so there is great visual story telling and atmosphere in his comics. His work is a real pleasure to enjoy, especially with some good ambient music in the background. It really is a shame that little of his work is published in English. If you like Sci-fi and Fantasy comics, often with a surreal touch, you will probably enjoy experiencing his talents. Here is a list of his work published in the Heavy Metal magazine. And here is what's available on The Book Palace. "The Age Of Darkness" is especially recommended.
