Contrary to popular belief abstract painting is not easy to do. Although the creative process differs, ending up with something visually meaningful can be a lot of work. Here is a quote by Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most famous 20th-century artists who has been credited with painting the first modern abstract works:
"Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colours, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential."
Interestingly, in my experience unfinished abstract paintings tend to stay longer on my harddrive than other works. I guess it's the free nature of abstract imagery that makes them last.
